TRAUMA INFORMED SCHOOL SUCCESS

YSGOL GOLWG Y CWM (PRIMARY, SOUTH WALES) : TRAUMA AND MENTAL HEALTH INFORMED SCHOOL AWARD
At Golwg y Cwm we provide a caring, happy and stimulating environment, where all our children feel safe and secure. We pride ourselves on the nurturing approach and the family feel as you walk through our school doors. Our dedicated and enthusiastic staff provide an exciting, creative and challenging curriculum and are committed to achieving the highest standards in teaching and learning for all children. A high priority is given to pupils’ personal, social and emotional development and we promote high standards of behaviour where children learn and play together. Children are at the heart of everything we do and we strongly believe that it is our role to ensure that all children reach their full potential whilst they are a member of our school family.
We strive to build positive relationships with our families and the community. Our dedicated family engagement officer is at hand to help, support and provide additional services if needed.
We are very fortunate to have wonderful school grounds and our own woods and the school is part of the Forest school initiative. This allows our children unique opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands on learning experiences in our outdoor environment.
“Ysgol Golwg y Cwm provides a caring, safe and nurturing environment in which every child is encouraged and supported to flourish, to feel safe and to feel and experience happiness as they learn. Because of the supportive positive relationships that exist between the adults and children, that are consistent and PACEful, there is a shared joy in all that takes place. The school is led by a supportive, knowledgeable head teacher who, with her deputy head, have ensured that all staff have been equipped with the knowledge and understanding needed to use the PRRRs and PACE to best effect – this is evident across the school. The school team are passionate and inclusive – ensuring every child is given the support they need. The willingness and supportive nature of the staff team to implement trauma informed approaches to support the direction of the school is evident – key interventions are making a difference. The children love their school, value the adults who help them every day and know how and where to go for help should they need it. The school governors are supportive of the school and the direction it has taken. Maggie (the dog) and other animals are obvious assets to the enhancement of relationships throughout the school – they are loved, appreciated and utilised for both regulation and reward. The use of the outdoors, and in particular forest school, is exploited to support children’s mental health and well-being.
My overriding memories will be of the happy smiling faces of all the children as they enjoyed their day at school, witnessing children experiencing delightful times in the outdoors and their love of the animals as well as talking with eloquent individuals who were able to talk to me about about their emotions with maturity, honesty and understanding.”

LITTER LETTER
17/03/23
Dear Parents,
Yesterday we did a litter pick around our school grounds and outside the school fences and found an awful amount of rubbish which was really worrying for us. We collected 20 bags of rubbish! Most of the rubbish we found was chocolate wrappers, crisps packets and sweet wrappers.
As a healthy school we would like your children to eat a bit healthier and would like to remind you that at snack times children should only be eating fruit, yoghurt and cheese. We hope that this will help your children and also reduce the rubbish/litter we are finding in our school yard.
As part of the school council, we will be talking to all of the children in assembly about what we have found and about eating healthier at snack times in school.
We hope you will support us and send in healthy snacks for your child.
Many thanks
